Theft from Fuel Tanks is becoming more common each year, with this commodity becoming more expensive year by year, together with the fact that 'Fuel Tanks' are normally an easy target for the thief, with many potential escape routes should they get disturbed.

The thefts are also getting more daring with many thefts being carried out in broad daylight, by what neighbours see as regular delivery drivers or maintenance staff, listed below are just a few examples that we have been told about:

  • Thieves arriving in a Fuel Tanker, wearing Hi-Viz jackets & carrying identity cards, they calmly drop the filler hose into the tank, and start pumping (what the neighbours do not know is that the pump is emptying the tank rather than filling it up).
  • Thieves very regularly taking small quantities from a chosen tank (never emptying it), leaving the owner thinking they just use a lot of fuel (common around Farm & Business tanks).
  • Thieves emptying the tank (all bar a few litres), knowing that the tank will be refilled by the owner within a few days (especially in cold weather), then they revisit and repeat the theft.
  • Thieves forcing open 'Fuel Tank' lids, breaking locks and caps to carry out the theft, this results in extra repair costs (this damage is often repeated on there next attempt.
  • Thieves drilling the tank (because they cannot get to the lid) and emptying the contents into tanks within their vehicles, then driving away leaving the excess fuel to empty onto the ground creating a environmental disaster.

 

Fuel Tank's (home fuel, farm diesel etc) are notoriously difficult products to protect, with no one perfect solution to cover each one, this is due to the fact that they are:

  • Often located in open, easy to access locations (access is required to refill).
  • There are many shaped and sized Tanks.
  • Farm & Business Fuel tanks are accessed by many workers, at all times of a day.
  • There are limited locations to fit Alarm Detectors.
  • The loactions can be subject to movement by Family or Animals.
  • Often made from double skinned plastic.  
 
Cost of just one fuel theft, can run into hundreds of Euro's for the owner, together with the inconvenience having no fuel during a cold spell and battling your insurance company, so deployment of a Security System can be a valuable asset.
 
The potential burglar will naturally work out the RISK & REWARD before carrying out a theft, your aim is to increase their RISK or reduce their REWARD (ideally both).

Security Suggestions: 

Because Fuel Tank's (home fuel, farm diesel etc) are notoriously difficult products to protect, there is no one perfect solution for all tanks, our best advice would be to look at the possible solutions below and decide if one or more products would be of benifit to you.

The potential burglar will naturally work out the RISK & REWARD before carrying out a theft, your aim is to increase their RISK or reduce their REWARD (ideally both).  

It is quite often better to use two or three small affordable solutions together, rather than one expensive system, this allows you to be more flexible in your approach, covering more potential risk areas etc.  

Listed below are some options to consider: 

WIRELESS ALARM & MAGNETIC CONTACT:

  •  The battery powered Magnetic Contact & Magnet fitted onto the underneath of the fuel tank access lid, when lifted a wireless signal is transmitted back to a Wireless Receiver (located inside a house, building or office), which can be between 25 to 900 metres away (depending on chosen system). 
  • The Wireless Receivers can be chosen to give the desired results if activated, these include:
    • Loud Internal Sirens.
    • Loud External Sirens.
    • Telephone Key-Holders (telephone extension lines required).
    • Internal Chime.
    • Text Messages (GSM models).
    • External Voice Alerts.
    • Flashing Lights.

WIRELESS ALARM & VIBRATION SENSOR.

  • The battery powered Vibration Sensor fitted onto the underneath of the fuel tank access lid, when forced open a wireless signal is transmitted back to a Wireless Receiver (located inside a house, building or office), which can be between 25 to 900 metres away (depending on chosen system). 
  • The Wireless Receivers can be chosen to give the desired results if activated, these include:
    • Loud Internal Sirens.
    • Loud External Sirens.
    • Telephone Key-Holders (telephone extension lines required).
    • Internal Chime.
    • Text Messages (GSM models).
    • External Voice Alerts.
    • Flashing Lights.

WIRELESS ALARM & PRESSURE MAT

  • The battery powered Pressure Mat is hidden underneath a mat on the floor (obvious access point), when stood on a wireless signal is transmitted back to a Wireless Receiver (located inside a house, building or office), which can be between 25 to 900 metres away (depending on chosen system). 
  • The Wireless Receivers can be chosen to give the desired results if activated, these include:
    • Loud Internal Sirens.
    • Loud External Sirens.
    • Telephone Key-Holders (telephone extension lines required).
    • Internal Chime.
    • Text Messages (GSM models).
    • External Voice Alerts.
    • Flashing Lights.

EXTERNAL PERIMETER BEAMS:

  • One or more External Perimeter Beams or PIR's located at the access points of the Fuel Tanks, if people are detected anywhere near to the Fuel Tank, Wireless Receivers & Sirens can be activated. 
  • The Wireless Receivers can be up to 900 metres away, and can perform all types of results such as:
    • Loud Internal Sirens.
    • Loud External Sirens.
    • Telephone Key-Holders (telephone extension lines required).
    • Internal Chime.
    • Text Messages (GSM models).
    • External Voice Alerts.
    • Flashing Lights.

 

This method is one of our most recommended if the location is suitable for external protection, it protects the tank before the potential thieves can even get close to it, especially important when using modern plastic tanks which can easily be punctured.  

DECOY CAMERA'S & SECURITY SIGNAGE

One or more suitable placed Decoy CCTV Camera's & Security Signage, used in conjunction with an Wireless Alarm System or CCTV, can be a very good deterrent, hopefully resulting in the thief believing that the RISK has increased, for no additional REWARD.
